The “Green Dam Girl” – Netizens Spoof the Censorship Software

The massively discussed Green Dam – Youth Escort Censorship Software is the hottest topic on Chinese Internet during this week.

Spoofing is a very classical Chinese Internet culture. Netizen absolutely won’t let the disgusting Green Dam off. Thus, the “Green Dam Girl” has been created by netizens.

The “alpaca” in the pictures refers to the “Grass Mud Horse“, a very popular dirty pun on China Internet.

The “crab” logo in the pictures refers to “harmonize”, a term directly derived from President Hu Jintao’s regular exhortations for Chinese citizens to create a harmonious society. In spoken Chinese, river crab sounds very much like harmony”, which in China’s cyberspace has become a synonym for censorship.

    as a Chinese,i cannot agree with you...
    the single word "娘 (niáng)“ in Chinese means mother
    and the "XX娘" is not a normative Chinese expression,it's a Japanese expression
    the 娘 after XX娘 just means girl or female...there is not any vulgar or negative information with the word 娘....

    By the way, I believe the original "OTAKU girl" is more pure, but the "Green Dam girl" is not just for fun. It is more about spoof + abuse. Its Chinese name is "绿坝娘 (lǜ bà niáng)“. The "娘 (niáng)“ here is more vulgar and negative.

  • It's originally a Japanese thing to personalize everything into cute little girl characters, they do it for countries (Afghanis-tan) up to operating systems (Windows XP-tan)

    I found this page through the article posted on the BBC's website and after scrolling through the images I must say some of the characters look familiar. Especially the drawing of Nitori Kawashiro (image #26).
